Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 04/26/2022

Number: 1

Monarch Waystation #271 reports the first sighting of a male ruby-throated hummingbird at 10:05 am this date. I was checking the status of some transplanted seedlings in the front yard when the bird appeared; we both "froze" for a moment to assess each other, then the bird nectared at 2 neighboring Wild Columbine plants in the front bed about 3 feet away from me. I stayed still and watched it fly westward and out of sight around the edge of the building our townhouse is in. Regret that I didn't have a camera with me at that time. The Columbines have been pouring out blooms like crazy for the last 2 weeks, and a dozen or more have begun going to seed. Glad my suspicion that a hummingbird may have been around to encourage this "bloom bazaar" was finally confirmed.
