although we reported a tentative monarch identification 2 days ago in South Reston, we watched this butterfly for several minutes as it flitted and soared along the margin of West Market pond, nectared on some low growing flowers (one of the 'creeping Charlies' and common dandelion) and perched briefly on both sycamore and maple leaves of nearby trees. eventually this butterfly drifted out of view. local common milkweed is only sprouting in a few locations and is no more than 8 inches tall
