Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)
Sightings report image

Date: 05/10/2022

Number: 1

First RTHB of the season here, an adult male, was first observed at the feeder this morning at 10:25 EDT.

He appeared on the smaller side and slim, but eager, healthy, and well-developed with a deep, rich ruby colored gorget; I believe the same individual reappeared the remainder of the day at varying intervals of as little as five and up to forty-five minutes until 14:00, then was more scare until observed again after 19:00, all for brief stops of a few sips.

I was late putting my feeder up on May 7th, and saw other reports nearby on the 6th, 7th, and 8th. So an earlier passer-by may have been disappointed before continuing north.

April was fairly wet, but it's been very dry for over two week now, and warm. Four weather reports called for 61°F to 65°F high today, but it was 72°F by noon before peaking at 76°F. Many early spring blooms such as crokus are already spent, daffodils and such are in full bloom the past couple days, and the forest floor is half brown with fallen leaves and half green, with plants such as trillium well up but without blooms yet.

Welcome back to your northern breeding grounds, little guy!
