Signs of Spring

A Black Swallowtail caterpillar overwintered in my 10 gallon aquarium since last September when it went into pupae on the top screened cover. She just hatched out as almost totally black female Eastern black swallowtail. I released her in my backyard and she was happy to start her life with wings.
I was not sure if she was going to hatch out because I was afraid a spider might have killed her over the winter. She was very small for a swallowtail. I forgot to take her photo. As a caterpillar, she loved to dine on wild fennel, dill and Queen Anne's lace.
