moments before this image was snapped, this eagle had plunged into the Kennebec River 200 meters downstream of this perch high in a black cottonwood. the eagle flew beside us along the riverbank and landed on this dead branch as we watched. although water dripped from the eagle's wings, tail, and body as we made this image, wet feathers are best shown on the eagle's head. we tried another image as the eagle shook its entire body with sprayed water droplets glistening in the sun. however, the eagle had allowed our quota of images for the day and flew away down river. we did not confirm that this eagle actually caught any prey during its dive into the water.
