Number: 1

Front garden of house on urban lot. Originally created in the late 1980s on a pure sand substrate, the garden is heavily mulched each year from neighbours leaves that would head for landfill after falling on lawns! Plants have been selected for native bees and butterflies, with Giant American swallowtail coming as a regular visitor from 2000 on Hop Tree. North side of house is a shaded native woodland garden, trillium, wild ginger, ferns, and Papaw and Redbud at edge. Back is largely native trees and shrubs, including oak grown from acorn, and with small garden pond. South side is sunny woodland strip with taller native shrubs. Garden appeared on HGTV about 20 years ago.
