Hummingbird (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/03/2022

Number: 4

Seeing 4 at a time, so I'm thinking there are probably more. Our adult resident male plus 3 juveniles (the adult females are probably on their second nests) hang out in the front yard on various perches in the trees. The juveniles are constantly fighting over the flowers (bee balm, cuphea, butterfly bush, fuchsia, Major Wheeler's honeysuckle, zinnia, salvia, and others). Our adult male tries to stay out of the most of the time. He does exhibit his mating dance/flight fairly frequently. He goes to the feeders more often than the juveniles. I can always rely on him at one of his 2 favorite feeders from 8:30-8:50ishpm every night. There are a lot of flowers stretched out through the backyard and one juvenile seems to have claimed it, at least for the time being. She/he rests on a very high dead branch of an oak tree and surveys her territory. The juveniles are a lot of fun to watch, especially when they chase the songbirds. They usually chase the goldfinches, house finches, titmice, and chickadees. Today, we caught one going after a blue jay.
