Monarch Egg Sighted

Date: 07/11/2022

Number: 3

This is my first time reporting. Last year (2021) I observed a fair amount of monarch butterflies flying around and landing on my lilacs and coneflowers. In July of that year I got to watch my first monarch caterpillar pupate and emerge as a butterfly over a few days. This year, despite having a large blooming of lilacs in the spring followed by other flowers (columbine, sweet William, daylilies, zinnias, violas, coneflowers, monarda, monkshood, lupine, blazing star, forget me nots, marigolds, peonies, bush hydrangea and catnip) I have seen hardly any butterflies (of any kind) or bees. I do not use pesticides, and I have encouraged and increased milkweed growth also in my gardens (which were also blooming). Not knowing exactly what monarch eggs look like, I am not sure about this reporting of eggs, but a few days later, I did see a monarch caterpillar ( which I do know, about 1/2 inch long) on that same plant, and a few days later (July 14) saw it again, much grown.
