Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 07/08/2022

Number: 1

On July 8, 2022, my son saw the first monarch in our yard in Springville, NY. We have milkweed that grows in our yard and garden. Since this 1st sighting date, we are currently raising 20+ monarch larva from eggs in captivity. We currently have 10 monarch chrysalises, of which the first five are scheduled to hatch late next week. We usually raise 200-300 monarchs in captivity each summer, but this summer the arrival of the adult migration monarchs was later than past years, and we are finding much fewer eggs on our resident milkweed plants. Last year, 2021, we had captivity-raised and released monarchs by July 8.

We raise monarchs from eggs since we've observed past years that captured and raised larva tend to be parasitized by flies and die during the chrysalis stage.
