Milkweed Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 07/30/2022

Number: 1

A stem survey of the milkweeds growing at Monarch Waystation #271 was completed around Noon today. Image shows the front yard, the smaller bed just visible. The live stem totals for each milkweed species present were recorded as:
Front yard: Purple Milkweed = 56; Butterflyweed = 8; Swamp Milkweed = 2; Tropical Milkweed = 37.
Back yard: Purple Milkweed = 6; Butterflyweed = 3; Swamp Milkweed = 21 [includes sprouts from newly shed seeds!]; Tropical Milkweed = 2; plus 2 possible Common Milkweed sprouts, too young to tell species for certain.
Note: After last frost all Tropical Milkweeds were pinched way back when planted to induce bushiness. Most side stems grew out to measure more than half the total height of the tallest main stem on each plant and many stems are flowering separately. I recorded those long side stems as separate live stems in this survey.
