This adult was directly on the beach sand during a busy beach day, about 6 feet from the edge of the water. There are lots of milkweeds nearby to the side of the beach. I was afraid that some kids would accidentally step on the butterfly - it would fly - it did not appear injured but it kept coming back to the same spot on the sand.
