Number: 16
I've reared 16 so far, with about 25 chrysalises and maybe 20 caterpillars in hampers. These 16 captive-reared are only 1/3rd to 1/2 the number reared by this time during the last 3 years.
This season I saw only one first generation monarch and hence only eight eggs or larva. Now I'm finding a steady supply of what must be third generation eggs and larva, not a bumper crop by any means but a decent enough number to be encouraging. The caterpillars, with only a couple of exceptions, have been very healthy. All are reared outside in mesh hampers and the weather seems conducive to their well-being.
