Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/01/2022

Number: 1

In 2021, between June 03 August 01, I found 104 monarch caterpillars on the common milkweed in my home garden, which I then put in butterfly cages. By the 1st of August, 79 of these caterpillars had completed their metamorphosis to become butterflies, 44 males and 35 females.

This year, between June 19 and July 04, I found only ten caterpillars. Of these ten, nine were successful in becoming butterflies, five males and four females.

As of today, August 01, I have not been able to find any caterpillars since July 04. I have also not seen any butterflies either, including the one that laid the eggs in mid June that gave me the ten caterpillars.

I have searched my common, butterfly bush, and swamp milkweed plants each and every day without success. Other individuals in our residential neighborhood with milkweed plants have concurred that there simply is no monarch population in our area of Kansas this summer.
