A couple monarch butterflies have been gathering nectar from our joe-pye, purple coneflower and other native plants for a couple weeks. Almost daily the female lays eggs on young common milkweed. Some of these young milkweeds come up in the lawn where I mow so I collect those that would otherwise be destroyed, bring them inside and raise them to be released as butterflies. Unfortunately many of the eggs and young caterpillars found in our milkweed patch that I don’t bring inside are eaten by spiders and ants. I use no herbicides or pesticides. Occasionally I find a large beautiful caterpillar like the one pictured.
