For August 4 I only saw one male monarch patrolling all day.
He very actively harassed hummingbirds and swallowtails away from the butterfly bushes.
At 5:35ish he suddenly stopped patrolling and disappeared.
I guess he may have caught a female coming in from the east of the yard where I could not see.
I guess a squirrel or bird could have got him, too but we’ll see if he shows up again on the 5th.

Recall this may be the male who appeared a week ago Tuesday eve and has been in my yard since. Seven captive raised monarchs - at least one male and four female- were released in my yard from about 2.5 miles away on Sunday. One male was chased out of the yard last Saturday night.
So this could be a different male than the one that first appeared. He uses all the same perches, though.
He has mated for sure four days in a row (sun-weds), and about 7 eggs appeared on showy milkweed Wednesday. The narrowleaf patch is too hard to search.
I gave four eggs (from on the top of a leaf, or hanging over the sidewalk, or where the dogs will brush the leaves) to the gardener from 2.5 miles south who will raise them protected in mesh cages after bleaching the eggs & milkweed she feeds them.
I had some fails last year in raising cats in my yard so I prefer to let most eggs take their chances in my yard this year.

The male that appeared here two Tuesdays ago could conceivably have hatched from the first eggs laid in my yard this year (see earlier observation).

Or it could have come from those container-raised monarchs from the yard 2.5 miles south or anywhere else.

We need a good way to mark the captive-raised ones during the season, not just the tags for the migrators.
