This year I purposefully dedicated five areas of my landscaping to pollinators. We have a xeriscape 12-acre "yard" but 90% of the landscaping has been allowing whatever will grow with a little water, grow. This year, inspired by NWF classes, flower beds were created in areas where not much grew. Native lantanas, muhly grasses, lots and lots of species of salvias, blackfoot daisies, four-nerve daisies, chocolate daisies, blue mist flowers, were planted. Packets of Texas wildflowers and pollinator garden seeds were sown to intermix with the planted plants and to fill in the gaps. Common sunflowers and cow pasture daisies flourish in my yard in the summer so they were thinned to create backdrops/divisions between the pollinator areas. The zinnias and cosmos obscure the low-lying lantanas. It's been an amazing, fun, fascinating, educational, sweaty growing season, challenged by a fierce drought. Am already planning next year's pollinator areas.
