Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 08/12/2022

Number: 41

This number is more than double the previous census taken 2 days earlier.

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 08/23/2022]:

All observations are done from inside the car, either stationary or moving along a 3.1 mile path through Cape May Point, that I defined last year. The path was designed to pass by most of the gardens at the Point that have late summer or fall blooming nectaring plants. So almost all of the monarchs I count are feeding or heading to a plant to feed. The number is an actual count by me. My wife can alert me but I must actually see the monarch for it to count. I takes between 50 minutes to and hour to travel the path and we try to be out as close to 2 PM as we can, 3-4 times a week.

Direction is difficult since we are on a peninsula with water on the east, south and west and the monarchs many times will hesitate before crossing. The only way I can determine direction accurately would be to get out of the car and go to the waterline. Then I can be fairly sure the monarchs are crossing over to Delaware, but then, I would no longer be following the rules for my count.
