Aggressive Feeding Frenzy Has Begun; 2022 so far Overview:
The male that got here first claimed dominance over my deck of flowers and feeders this year He battled all comers until it seemed only 1 other male stayed around to steal sips and run A 2d nectar feeder in the opposite corner failed to bring any peace between them Interestingly the nectar feeder that is hung grouped closely with the seed and suet feeders is favored, even when he’s exasperated by bigger birds I’ve tried using different makes of feeders but it’s definitely location and not the style that he prefers
Unfortunately it seems the chatty female who dominated and raised clutches in 2020&2021 did not return to my deck at all this year
Females and others who stayed focused on the perimeter flowers and ignored the feeders were mostly likewise ignored Three was the most that could be seen at once last month, but I suspect the total to be higher; just judging by the directions and timing they come and go from within my field of view Only since the last days of July have any of those come in very close to me or checked out the feeders when the guys weren’t looking
This week that has changed At least 2 without any visible red have become more bold, alternating between flowers and feeder and joining the battles enthusiastically I’ve spent a considerable amount of time repeatedly trying to get all 4 in frame for a video still But when 8:30 PM arrived and the best I have is 1 dark squiggle and 2 blurrs you’d need to take my word about anyway I gave up and left them to it for the moments they had to fuel up before roosting for the night
They were visiting the sunflowers this morning and one slipped below the fray to some corner cuphea this evening
