Over the last six weeks or so, I have raised eight monarch butterflies from eggs collected on milkweed in my front yard. I have been following the procedure to sanitize the enclosure in between chrysalis hatchings and keep the caterpillars and butterflies separate to avoid transmission of any parasites. I have seven more stage 1 and 2 caterpillars happily munching away on milkweed. Interestingly, I have raised six females and two males. Why there is a preponderance of females I do not know.
