Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/21/2022

Number: 1

Spent several hours watching fields today, Sunday, for adult butterflies but again saw no monarch butterflies all day and only a few other species. Inspected many milkweeds, found no eggs or larva. Some sign of recently eaten leaves on one milkweek plant, with topmost tender leaflets almost completely eaten, but still found no larva. Nine days straight now without a monarch observed, it seems bleak, depressing, and is nearly distressing with so few adults observed this entire season despite good local conditions. Two evenings ago, saw a possible adult near sunset along woods edge flying among high birch leaves and other trees possibly seeking a place to roost, only 60% sure it was a monarch butterfly, and not a look-alike. - Saw Sandhill crane pair foraging much of day, at one point saw one chase something in grass and it came up with a mouse, repeatedly shaking it before consuming. - Hadn't seen Eastern phoebes for a couple days, assumed they departed southward, but saw three at dusk; possibly passers-by pair with juvenile, one perched on e-line and was quite plump, then saw two were perched on a high antenna with one foraging on concrete below. - Saw many turkey buzzards soaring overhead.
