Sightings report image

Date: 08/21/2022

Number: 260

At a Liatris ligulistylis field on a native horticultural farm in Foley, Minnesota. Temperature 77 degrees, sunny skies, light wind. Flower field's size was 1/4 mile long by 10 meters wide. All Meadow Blazing Star flowers in full bloom. Signs of directional flight and intense nectaring. One mating was seen. Two heavily used traffic patterns of adult monarchs leading to potential roosts were observed, while on a hay ride, next to this field in a line of deciduous forest trees.

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 08/23/2022]:

Attended this field from 12 noon to 3 pm. Walked the perimeter of it.

There were about thirty other people who were photographers and drone operators from various fields, amateur and pro.

We chatted while we were there and then we collectively made guesses on counts based on sections observed by us as we were spaced along where the butterflies were thickest and visiting most frequently in the field.

This site is a horticulture field of Meadow Blazing Star and these are concentrated monarchs drawn to the flowers only for a ten day period or so during peak migration times.
