Point Pelee National Park @ the Tip
6:30-7:55pm, 25°c, Sunny with strong west wind @ 15/21 kmh. Daytime high 26°c. Overnight low 15c. Sunset at 8:05.
When opening Tip gate to drive down spotted the first two monarchs individually settled on Hackberry Tree.
At base of Tip tower observed two monarchs intensely nectaring on Woodland sunflowers. There is also an abundance of Goldenrod but I have yet this season to see them on it.
At Tip shuttle stop one monarch was settled on Virginia creeper vine.
On east side of the Tip viewed from sandy shoreline & looking
west observed monarchs flitting to tree tips & fighting the strong west wind that was cutting through the trees to east side.
Finally our first clusters! With at least 9 mated pairs roosting. Already mostly established when I arrived on east side at about 7pm.
One Hackberry Tree had 6 mated pairs on it.
One cluster of 8 included 3 mated pairs! Photo attached) Another cluster of 4 had 1 mated pair. Other clusters of 2 & 3. Observed a monarch being chased. It was a male who captured a female, took her down to the beach. Moments later he carried her up up up to a tree. This is currently on the video on my fb page & will soon be on my YouTube channel.
All monarchs but 1 appeared pristine. The one male which was in a mated pair had half of a wing torn off.
Monarchs were roosting on hackberry & mulberry trees, bare branches & grapevine at 12-15'up.
Observations with clicker, by eye, binoculars & camera.
Sun, warmth & north wind tomorrow will see them on their way.
