Monarch (OTHER Observations)
Sightings report image

Date: 09/01/2022

Number: 16

Last year we saw a couple monarch caterpillars die on our milkweed early in the season. At the end of the year (2021) we saw one chrysalis fail to produce a monarch. This is rare; we have seen fully successful hatches here for 5+ years. We assumed spraying down south for Zika Virus was the cause. Last year at this time we had 34 healthy chrysalises. This year has been catastrophic. We currently have only 3 viable chrysalises and 13 dead ones. Most caterpillars make it to the chrysalis phase but they die immediately thereafter.
