Monarch, Captive-Reared
Sightings report image

Date: 08/29/2022

Number: 6

I only raise monarch eggs or larvae the need to be moved from harms way.

I collected 11 eggs in late July. They were on freshly sprouted milkweed that had popped up in my neighbor's grass, next to a field with common milkweed. I snatched them before our neighbor mowed down the small shoots with their precious egg cargo.

I truly felt like a Monarch Mom, nurturing them from such tiny, nearly invisible, tykes into large beautiful and strong butterflies ready to head off toward Mexico.

This was my first time tagging monarchs for Monarch Watch.

2 males 4 females

Male in photo.

I have 5 more to release soon.

8-29-22 was warm and very windy. I released the 6 in a large hill field filled with fresh golden rod, asters and other nectar filled flowers. The monarchs had no trouble hanging onto the golden rod while they fueled up.
