Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 09/03/2022

Number: 50

Was on my bike and saw one larva crossing the road, stopped to give it a hand, put it on a milkweed and then notice another 20 larvae. Then right down the road, there was another stand of milkweed with 30 larvae. Many with multi larvae on them. This is just a few miles from where I live. There we have at least 300 milkweed, but I counted just five larva today. I was stunned to see so many at the other place. It is mostly pasture land, with a lot of clover in bloom. So I usually see adults there. Will do an adult count tomorrow. But back to the larva on these roadside milkweed. Most were in their 4th or 5th instar. But this is northern New Hampshire in the mountains. Frost could hit in the next couple of weeks. That is jeopardy one. The other is most meadows here go wild in the summer and then are mowed down starting now to prevent them from turning to forest. It's not good timing for these 50 larvae. I might have expected to see this many larvae earlier in the season. Not in September.
