I work at the University Park Airport in State College, PA. Occasionaly, especially during the Monarch fall migration, we will see a Monarch Butterfly heading across our airport ramp (e.g., 9/12/2021).
Today, at about 12:55 PM, while loading baggage in the cargo bin for an outbound flight, I briefly noticed a Monarch Butterfly trying to cross our ramp. While it appeared to be trying to head west, it was more or less tacking to the northwest against a southwesterly headwind of 9 mph. It was flying between 5 and 20 feet above the ground.
At the time our skies were partly cloudy, the temperature was 81°F, the dew point was 64°F, with 54% humidity, the air pressure was 28.78 inches and beginning to drop.
