Counting adult monarch butterflies for ten-minute period after 19:10 (68F, NW wind 5 to 10mph): from west end of Lakeview Park strolled eastward and watched along a stand of trees which is near the shore, eighteen adults generally flying westward but also among sugar maple, northern white cedar, mountain ash, and several other berry trees and bushes. Many more adults were seen outside of the counting period before and after, coming from the east on their way to points southwest along Lake Michigan, landing on orange berries of mountain ash, and red berries as well as on cedar leaves as if preparing to roost overnight. (pictured is a female taking flight after a few moments on very ripe red berries)

A cold front came through early this morning and today, with early winds from the west increasing as the day progressed and became northwest with afternoon gusts. So these adults have worked hard to get here this evening.
