Monarch Larva Sighted
Sightings report image

Monarch Waystation #271 reports finding five 5th instar monarch larvae feeding on the Swamp Milkweeds in the back bed. The aphids have been very numerous this year, coating many Swamp Milkweed leaves with their honeydew. Many leaves eventually turned black with fungus, and I found some small monarch larvae reduced to "deflated black sacks" hanging from some leaves. Some Swamp Milkweeds have resprouted leaves after some light trimming of dead stems. Now hoping aphid predators make a comeback, the milkweeds are not happy being drained by aphids while in the middle of dry and hot weather.
