a single adult monarch arrived at 0930 hrs from east to west at tall trees lining the eastern shore of the Kennebec River at Fort Halifax Park. the monarch was flying rapidly only 3 feet above the mowed lawn, but as it approached close to the treeline it lofted quickly upward as if an updraft of air flowed toward the treetops as the air warmed in morning light. the monarch disappeared above the trees and probably continued westward across the Kennebec River.
