From what I understand from my friend, who alerted us of the Monarchs beginning to roost in this park (Wendy Park/Whiskey Island – a known Monarch fall roosting location in past years, along shore of Lake Erie), the roost began forming in the late afternoon on 9/6, perhaps around 5-6pm. [Our friend] and a park naturalist stayed longer than my husband and I and estimated higher numbers in the range of 400+ Monarchs. [Our friend] checked the roost on the following morning and most of the Monarchs had disbursed leaving a few floating around.
’m not sure [of the nectaring sources] – there may be some goldenrod in this park.
Online weather sources indicate overnight temps were approximately Hi: 63; Lo: 59 with winds initially out of the south and changed to winds out of the north-northeast.
I estimated by groups of 10 for approx. 45 minutes at 7:30pm.
