My milkweed plants have been decimated; aphids were significant on one of them and then the caterpillars started to appear and have eaten everything remaining. I called around to local nurseries to see if I could find more milkweed, but it's too late in the season now. I saw a few suggestions online for cucumbers and acorn squash as a possible alternative. Out of shear desperation, I put down a few slices of ORGANIC cucumber to see how they would react to it; surprisingly well actually. There's basically no other food source available and they're hungry, so next year I will plant 4x the milkweed and hope that this will suffice for this season. I have counted upwards of 25 large caterpillars and one currently in chrysalis. I have also placed bird netting over their area of activity.
