Number: 40

Roosting on bottom tree branches around 10 a.m.

[Additional information and photo contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/13/2022]:

counted at least 40 but there were probably more. I have several large trees on the property. I saw about 20 flying around in the week before I saw the large group in the tree. It is possible they were roosting a few days before I saw them. It was a drizzly morning with temps in the 60s. I saw them for a few days, now they are gone. There are still two flying around the yard. It was fairly windy that morning, I think the wind was from the north.

I have perennial sunflowers on the side of the house, probably over 100 blossoms or more, some zinnias, a tithonia, several morning glories and marigolds, rudbeckia, and swamp, tuberosa, and showy milkweed in the garden. Although, only the tuberosa has a few blossoms left. I do have some anise hyssop but it is mostly dried up and one salvia plant. I have some large annual sunflowers but there are only a few flowers left on them as most are also dried up. Also some petunias in pots.

I do not know the type of tree they were roosting in. . .

I did just count the ones at eye level for me hanging from the bottom leaves on the tree. There probably were more. They were spaced out enough that I could manually count them. It was around 10:00 am.
