Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 09/09/2022

Number: 78

On Queen Anne’s Lace, some in trees, meadow.

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/15/2022]:

We literally count by ones. . .Sometimes we split a meadow (left vs. right) to avoid overlapping but mostly we observe together and count out loud by one's.

Walks tend to be anywhere between 30-80 mins. Time of day can be late morning or late afternoon (2 hours before sunset) usually mid 70s. But 9/2 we saw 30+ early evening at 80°. When the temperature dropped this week we saw very few if any. Warmer and sunnier days returned yesterday early afternoon (200+).

Usually seen low, near wild flowers 50-65% of the time, occasionally fluttering above in woods by Lake Erie and weekly seen 1-2 fluttering by a stream across from our house, or on a random state road by a woodland.

It wasn't windy on sunny days but definitely some wind (9/6) above 12mph with rain. We star gaze so usually when it's cloudy we see few stars and fewer monarchs. Cleveland, Ohio gets less than 60 days of sunshine on average per year.
