Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/11/2022

Number: 10

I got up before sunrise and headed to the South Bass island lighthouse grounds to look for roosting monarchs. I found 10 scattered on different branches on the leeward side of a hackberry tree closest to the sunflower field. As the sun rose, monarchs began to bask and then leave the clusters to nectar on the sunflowers. The weather is warm and winds are light, so monarchs did not bottle up on the island last night. But the weather is going to get cool and possibly rainy today, so there may be more roosting tonight. This is a favorite stopover site of monarchs crossing Lake Erie, roosts should get bigger between now and the end of September.
