Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 09/06/2022

Number: 50

At our home we had a recent hatch of monarch eggs on potted native milkweed plants in the garden. We experienced an extreme and unusual heat wave that lasted several days. Temperatures exceeded well over 100 degrees for several days. The small larvae began to struggle and die, especially those getting the most sun and those in less dense plants. We placed large umbrellas over the pots and a large oscilalting fan in the area which helped slow the decline. The remaining larvae and chrysalides appear to be healthy. I read that milkweed cannot tolerate heat as the toxins that protect the monarchs becomes too strong for them. Would like to know if you have any information on that. We believe we lost 12 of the 50 larvae during the heat wave.
