Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/10/2022

Number: 200

[Information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 09/26/2022]:

The September 10th monarch observations were made on a half mile trail section at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve in Hammond, IN by Caryn and I, employees at the preserve. Several guests who stopped at the Environmental Awareness building after their hikes mentioned seeing lots of monarchs.

From 4:00-5:00 PM we went out on the trail and kept a running count as groups of 5 butterflies were seen. After an hour we agreed that we had seen at least 130 -150. A second colleague was walking on the trail in the opposite direction and saw what he described as dozens of monarchs.

Monarchs were nectaring on boneset, asters, goldenrod, and white snakeroot.

The weather was 81 degrees and sunny.
