My last sighting of this juvenile female hummingbird was on Tuesday, Sept. 13. She both drank from the feeder constantly and nectared from the flowers in pots on my deck. The other juvenile female departed the previous week. I was out most of the day on Wed. 9/14, but was home from 2 pm thru dusk and she did not come to the feeder at that time. However there were some days when she wouldn't come in the evening so I wasn't sure if she left until Thurs. 09/15 went by without a sighting and I knew she was gone. She was feeding quite heavily on the 13th so I realized her departure time was quickly approaching. Due to the drought this summer, a lot of the flowers perished and didn't bloom. There are noticeably less insects as well so the hummingbirds in general have departed earlier than normal. The adult males were gone from here by the beginning of the 1st week of August and adult females by the middle of August. Mid August is normally when migration around here gets underway. A lot of the other species of migratory birds left early as well. I have no doubt the drought had been a major factor in this occurrence as it severely diminished their natural food sources. Photo was taken 08/27/22 along with many others of her.
