Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/18/2022

Number: 12

A mix of 12+ adult females and juveniles still here and still very active at various gardens and feeders. Many of the juvenile males are showing bits of red on their throats at this point. Lots of continual chasing, playing, and flower/feeder guarding. They fuss each other out a lot with that signature chirp. With me, they fly right up to me and squeak at me in a friendly manner. Many of them will also perch quite near me when I'm outside tending to the gardens or sitting. Our 2 resident adult males left on September 9th and 14th. A juvenile male, from a first nest this summer, left on September 8th. It's hard for me to tell how many resident adult females (mama birds) we still have here and how many have left. Last year, the majority of our crew had left by September 17th, leaving just a half dozen or so juveniles. We're going to experience a bit of Indian summer the next several days and then it cools down quite a bit. I'm watching carefully. We've got 10 feeders up and they are all being used all throughout the day. Our last 2 babies left October 7th last year, followed by a couple of weeks of travelers passing from the north. Once all of ours leave, I'll keep 2-3 feeders up through November for any late stragglers.
