Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/21/2022

Number: 200

From noon until 3pm observed 1 - 2 Monarchs per minute flying south. Wind from the north. Seen on both beachside (Lake Michigan) and roadside (Marine Drive)

[Report moved from Monarch Adult Sighted to Monarch PEAK Migration by Journey North, 09/22/2022; additional information provided by observer:]

I have reported since 2013 and this is one of the three peak migrations I have had the pleasure to witness.

Early on, I sat on the beach and counted. About 2pm I walked the roadside of our neighborhood and counted there. While there was a tendency to observe waves of Monarchs, I estimated 1 - 2 per minute. On both sides of the property, it was a very steady stream.

Monarchs on the beach side were predominantly approximately 11 - 20 feet off the ground. Monarchs on the road side were lower. As a matter of fact, it seemed that many I saw on the roadside may have started off at ground level. Sitting water, gravel, mud and dust were on this side.

Weather was warm and sunny. They appeared to be receiving a real boost from the wind!

I don't think I saw more than a dozen Monarchs for the rest of the summer. Local milkweed was mostly intact, with few signs of nibbling.
