Monarch, Captive-Reared
Sightings report image

Date: 09/22/2022

Number: 13

We have a fairly extensive garden, and noticed our butterfly milkweeds were covered in monarch caterpillars. We brought 13 inside and kept them fed with milkweed leaves until they formed a chrysalis, and we would release them 24 hours after they emerged. All made it to adulthood and were successfully released outside, usually 2-4 at a time. The caterpillars would eat for several days and then hang in a “J” shape for maybe 12 hours, then begin to pupate. About 9 days later the green chrysalis would turn transparent…which appears dark with the butterfly all folded up inside…then it would break out and exercise it’s wings for a time. All looked healthy when released and flew into the woods south of my home.
