Point Pelee National Park at the Tip 8am-9:30 Sunrise 7:18
11°c, sunny with NNW wind at 12/18kmh.
Daytime high 16c. Fall temps have arrived.
*See last evening's roost counts.
*I had originally reported to Point Pelee a count of 3152. The morning light revealed two more large roosts to the east & the other to the west seen from Tip road north of Tip shuttle stop area.
8 am- All roosts in the shade were still intact. The two at Tip shuttle stop had sun shining on top halves of roosts & monarch were shivering & basking and slowly leaving one or two at a time. As the sun hit most of the roost the monarchs left flying to the west.
By 8:40 many were flying to the west/southwest. Observed 2 testing the wind at the west shoreline. Did not while there see any continue south out over the lake.
Many left their roosts & nectared on Woodland sunflowers or flew to another tree with sun shining on it & basked for awhile.
By 11 am the wind was due to change to NNE @ 7/17 kmh and we now know (as per sunset count) that they did leave to continue their journey to Mexico.
8:45- The roost at Sparrow Field near road began to break up. Monarchs shivered & basked & 1 at a time left the roost.
Observations by eye, binoculars, camera and clicker & visitors.
