After a chilly night of 47 degrees and 35 miles an hour winds observed a female or a juvenile “protecting†the hummingbird feeder from chickadee’s attempts to drink sugar water.
It was hovering and flying in rocking patterns side to side about 18’’ from the chickadee- scaring them away from the feeder at their each attempt
This is the first summer when I observed chickadees figuring out how to drink from the hummingbird feeder with the bee-guards: they slightly tip the access port due to their weight and drink syrupy water seeping under the bee guard
I have chickadees around for many years- this is a first for me to see them using hummingbird feeder this summer- we were in a drought situation, but we keep a bird bath with fresh water daily.
They went for sugar? Or just preferred the feeder syrup?
