Sightings report image

Date: 09/23/2022

Number: 3

Three separate Monarchs were sighted in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 23, 2022, at about 10:00 AM (PST). The temperature was in the high 80s. They were seen in the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Botanic Demonstration Garden. In the attached photo, one of the three Monarchs, believed to be a female, was flying in and out of a Rush Milkweed Garden. This garden includes an assortment of nectar plants and a shade tree. She appeared to be feeding. The two other Monarchs were flying in and around several other pollinator gardens with a variety of nectar plants including the Mexican Sunflower, a Monarch favorite. These gardens included Rush and Showy Milkweeds. Feeding was underway. Two were seen doing the “dance” several times but unclear if this was mating, territorial, or just greetings. Egg laying was not observed.
