Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/01/2022

Number: 4

I was SO happy to see our little juvenile hummingbirds this morning after last night's storm. We had winds up to 45mph from Ian. Needless to say, they had a rough day yesterday. I was very worried about them overnight. Today was a huge improvement and it showed. We still have at least 4 (probably a couple more) of our "resident" rubies. I believe all of them are juveniles. There is a possibility that one could be a resident adult female mama. We have also been having travelers come through nearly daily. They continue to feed from both flowers and feeders. We still have flowers, but some are fading. The cuphea, butterfly bush, shrimp plant, penta, lantana, porterweed, and fuchsia are all still doing fairly well. Surprisingly, temps are decreasing quite quickly this fall. We've already been down into the low 40s at night and will be again most of this week coming up. Hopefully, it won't stay this way as Octobers here tend to be quite pleasant and warmer. However, I suspect that our little ones will depart soon for their journey south. While I will miss them, I want them to leave in time to find fresh feeders, lots of bugs and flowers, and have safe and pleasant travel conditions along the way. Our last 2 resident juveniles last year left on October 7th. We continued to have travelers until October 23rd. God speed to all of our sweet little jeweled friends.

While the photo included is of poor quality, I wanted to include it to show one of our female juveniles ("Willow") feeding from a shrimp plant. This was a favorite this year and I highly recommend it.
