Hummingbird Sighting
Sightings report image

Date: 10/05/2022

Number: 2

I have to share this picture. It is a female or juvenile ruby-throated hummer with a white patch on top of its head. In the picture it is just to the left of the feeder hook shaft perching on a cluster of Salvia blossoms just below center of the picture (expand picture for better viewing). It either showed up yesterday when I thought only one hummer was present or showed up late this afternoon. The unusual white patch makes it very distinctive. Very cool! I think I have seen this phenomenon once before in a male ruby throat many years ago. The other hummer today (have pictures) only nectared at feeders but the one with the white patch nectared only at our black-and-blue salvias. October 5 ties our second latest sighting of a hummer during fall migration. Our latest ever sighting is October 10. Happy sightings!
