Our condo is behind the dunes next to the ocean in Myrtle Beach, SC, and while we were on the deck, about 17 monarchs flew by us. All were traveling solo. Most were headed inward toward land, and some were traveling south, parallel to the sand dunes.
(Sometimes when on the beach in fall we see them coming off the ocean, but today they must have all been following the dunes.)
These are definitely monarchs, which are bigger than other butterflies here. There are also lots of yellow sulfur and fritterlary butterflies flying south.
