Sightings report image

Date: 10/09/2022

Number: 4

I have seen 3 emerge today. I have about 13 more caterpillars and 4 chrysalis yet to hatch. This is peak so far. I plant milkweed and other nectar flowers to attract them. But there are far fewer this year. At peak last year I had 48 caterpillars on one plant at one time. Chrysalis were lined up along the fence like Christmas lights.

[Additional information contributed by observer, added by Journey North, 10/10/2022]:

They are not captive. They are in my backyard. I just plant milkweed for them. And other plants that all pollinators like. I just watch them. The butterflies started appearing last summer, it was my 2nd summer in my new home. I don’t interfere with their life cycle I observe. The only thing I do proactively is get rid of praying mantis because they are an invasive species here.
