Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 10/16/2022

Number: 70

11:11am -12:40 16°c Sunny with moderate SW wind @14/20kmh. About 70 monarchs in 90 minutes on this beautiful fall day. First one was seen at 11:11am, on the warm sunny east side of the Tip at Point Pelee National Park.
They flew from the north high over tree tops or over shoreline 1, 2 & 3 at a time. A few attempted to continue south over the lake but returned to the shoreline trees.
Numerous clusters of 2, 3, 5 & 8 most basking in the sunshine on Mulberry & Hackberry trees, vines & bare branches low to the ground & higher up to 15'. Many puddling on the sand & wet leaves on shore.

All pristine.

When I left the Tip area monarchs continued to arrive. Seen at Tip shuttle stop & at north end of park at NW Beach.

Wind will lighten to 3/7kmh & change to NW after 2pm giving them a window to continue their journey south. Freeze watches & warnings are posted for south of us (not us in SW Ontario) in Ohio & Indiana & more states south. Rain & cooler temps in the forecast next few days & strong unfavourable wind expected for the next week or so with warmer temps of 15ish again for a few days from Oct. 21st.

Observations by eye, binoculars & camera.
