Bald Eagle
Sightings report image

Date: 10/17/2022

Number: 1

we previously submitted several images of bald eagles in the same tree and often on the same dead branch along the Kennebec River at lower Water St., Waterville, ME. however, recent days the eagles, if perched in this tree at all, are on different branches. we realized several days ago that the old preferred perch was missing. the dead perch was present 19 SEP 2022, but is missing now. did it fall away spontaneously? did it fall during a wind event? did it break away while eagles were perching on the branch? what a surprise for the birds! today we confirm with new images and reference to old images that indeed the old preferred branch is gone. so we are no longer surprised when eagles perch in locations still in the same cottonwood, but on branches seldom used for three recent years. the image here in this entry shows one of the resident adult eagles on a perch we have not observed to be used previously. note that this eagle is perched on a live branch - see the buds now well formed for growth in 2023 now that 2022 leaves are fallen.
