Sightings report image

Date: 10/21/2022

Number: 15

10:45am - 11am. Just a quick visit while walking my dog. 11°c Sunny with moderate to strong SSW wind @17/23kmh. Daytime high 15° after 4 days of cloud & rain & highs of around 5c. Some areas got snow.
About 15 monarchs in 15 minutes on this beautiful fall day seen on the warm sunny east side of the Tip at Point Pelee National Park.
They flew from the north high over tree tops or over shoreline. Saw 1 attempt to continue south over the lake then kept descending toward lake where I lost sight of it.
Cluster of 2 & others individually basking in the sunshine on Mulberry & Hackberry trees & vines low to the ground & higher up to 20'all seen on east sunny side of trees/vines. Many puddling on the sand on shoreline.

All pristine with plump abdomens. Asters still fresh & plentiful.

When I left the Tip area monarchs continued to arrive. Seen at Tip shuttle stop area.

Wind will lighten Sunday afternoon 10/23 & change to northerly NE giving them a window to continue their journey south. Warm temps of 15°ish & sunshine the next 4 or 5 days & afterward highs of around 12c.

Observations by eye, binoculars & camera.

On my way home from an appt around 4pm observed a monarch crossing west over Point Pelee Dr & toward shoreline to the Park. 16°c & sunny.
